March Madness!

 Well basketball isn't the only thing that causes madness in March, pharmacology does too! This month has been filled with so many tests and back-to-back presentations that it was hard to keep track of what's coming next! On top of studying for a Med Pharm exam at the beginning of the month, I had two presentations in the same week for Endocrine and Neurology.  I found myself feeling overwhelmed at times and just needed to figure things out for myself on how to keep track of everything. I gave myself the biggest prep talk, found my center and just kept pushing because I knew that this is something that I can accomplish. My presentations turned out great and it was an awesome opportunity to educate my peers. I found that this was a teachable moment for me, it allowed me the opportunity to strengthen my study habits as well as prioritize what's important in the moment. 

            March is also the month where all of the Pharmacology students are studying for the  NBME. This exam is our final exam and based on all the information and drugs we have learned throughout the entire year.  This exam is the most important exam for us and the scores from this exam are even compared to the second-year medical students. To describe the stress of the class, “We’re all freaking out!” But again, it’s a teachable moment. It’s a moment to remind ourselves that we can do this and to be confident in the studying and practicing. Studying for the exam is an arduous task, but I know that all of my professors have given me the tools to master it!  Wish us good luck!

 April Service hours: 12 Total Spring Semester: 16 With the semester coming to a close, I wanted to take a moment and reflect on how far I've come throughout this year. This program has changed me in many positive ways. I used to struggle trusting my abilities and would often doubt myself while taking tests or speaking out in class; however this program has built up my confidence when approaching challenging questions, my presentations skills, and helped with some testing anxiety. This February, everywhere it was just a Tuesday

    Volunteer hours: 2 Spring total: 4   With Mardi Gras being canceled due to Covid protection and protocol New Orleans didn’t feel like home for the first time in years. New Orleans felt really different, it almost felt somber and didn’t seem like it was February. A lot of residents in New Orleans took that opportunity to decorate their homes to honor the spirit and tradition of Mardi Gras which was really beautiful. Students were given the week off for Spring break, which was really nice. It allowed everyone to take a break and even catch up on rest. A lot of students are not only studying Pharmacology modules, but we’re also preparing for the MCAT exam as well. Having the week break allowed me the opportunity to continue my community service efforts. I continued my efforts this month with Crescent City Famers. What a time to be thankful

 When reflecting back to this year one feeling comes to mind- and that's thankful. This semester I have learned so many things about myself. I have continued to refine my study habits all while pushing myself and my mind even further than I imagined. The last month of the pharmacology program we focused on Renal, GI, and Neoplasia. These particular areas were not originally my strong suit; however, I approached the lessons with more of an opportunity to learn and expand my mind versus feeling a sense of defeat before even beginning.      I also took the time to continue my service projects and commitments I had started at the beginning of the semester by sending Thanksgiving and Christmas cards to my senior penpals across the States. With the holidays approaching and Covid-19 ramping back up, it can be a lonely time for people who unfortunately have to be isolated away from their family. I hope that my cards can bring some happiness into their lives, even only for a few moments.  S
